Installing Wall Tiles On Drywall

In areas of high moisture such as walls in a shower for long term durability it is not advised to install tile over drywall even if the drywall is type mr moisture resistant. The top objective is to create a smooth and uniform surface on the drywall for the tile to be evenly placed. Ceramic tiles can be installed directly on drywall plaster or if they are in moist areas onto green drywall or even better cement backer board.

This is the case so much of the time that when people tell me on the phone that they have tiles they can push in with their hands in the shower or that the tiles are falling off the wall or seem squishy i immediately get the image. By far the most common problem i have encountered has been tile installed over drywall in shower wet areas. To do so make sure all of the tiles are intact and secure. If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place.

In areas that are exposed to an abundance of moisture it is better to install a cement board as a backer rather than a gypsum board. Step 1 prepare the wall.
