If the walls you want to tile are concrete walls with paint on them remove the paint before you install tile so the tile adhesive has something to grab onto and hold the tile in the correct place. You should not tile over wallpaper glossy surfaces lead paint or plywood. Preparing the drywall requires that the surface be roughed up with a sanding sponge prior to applying the mastic to adhere the tiles in place. If you re not sure if you have lead paint test kits are available.

Prime the area to seal the new drywall. Previously painted textured drywall prep. Or prime and paint the entire wall room before starting with your tile project. The wall has to simply be prepared in order to complete this task properly.

You may tile over existing tile painted or unpainted drywall plaster and textured walls. However tiling over tile can add quite a bit of thickness so make sure your wall can handle the weight. If you are tiling an area that is not in a bathroom tiles can be applied directly to the sheetrock simply and easily. Prime an area larger than you plan to tile to minimize the cut in work when you paint the rest of the room.

Sheetrock or drywall is no different for tiling over than wood plaster cement or other wall materials. Adding a backsplash to a painted wall can also help cover damaged drywall or tile work. Tiles are ideal for showers bathtubs and backsplashes. A backsplash can be a great way to add color and durability to the area around a sink or stove.

If you want to update your kitchen or bathroom walls with tiles you don t have to remove existing painted drywall to do so. It is possible to tile over painted drywall as long as the drywall is sufficiently prepared beforehand. Start by cleaning the wall to remove any grease then apply thin set adhesive and set the tile. In areas of high moisture such as walls in a shower for long term durability it is not advised to install tile over drywall even if the drywall is type mr moisture resistant.
