How to tile a fireplace wall.
Carefully place each tile on the wall.
Push the tile into place and wiggle it until it holds against the wall evenly spaced between the hearth and the tile above.
Finally tile the stoop.
Add a support ledge to the top to keep the tile in the middle over the firebox from sagging before the thin set hardened nail a 1 x 2 board across the top of the opening.
Then wiggle the tile gently to set it in place.
Complete tiling row by row moving up from the level shelf.
Use spacers on each side of the tiles to guarantee uniform spacing.
Check the level as you complete each row.
After thin set begins to cure remove the shelf and work tiles down each side of the firebox.

Butter the back of the tile with thinset using the edge of the trowel.
On larger tiles run the notched edge of the trowel over the thinset.
It covers everything from removing the old tile.
Repeat this process for the other three cut tiles at the base of the legs.
Gently tip the tile into the thinset from the bottom to the top.
Save cut pieces for last.
