How to rough frame a door on a concrete wall.
Cut the door header.
Whether framing for a door in a new home or on a remodeling project i follow the same sequence.
You will need to add 1 2 of plywood between the 2x4 s to get the right wall thickness of 3 1 2.
Use shims and or caulk to seal gaps between wall and frame.
The holes you drill should be only slightly smaller than the screws themselves.
It s essential to get this measurement right else your newly purchased garage door won t fit the opening or might actually be smaller than the opening.
That way you can be sure the opening is wide enough.
A rough opening refers to the space left inside a door or window frame door in this case where the actual door will be fitted.
The rough opening would be 40 1 2 x 86 1 4 for a 3 0 x 7 0 door frame.
To make the door header the top of the door frame cut two 2x4s to the same length as the width of the original opening and nail them securely together.
This gives me plenty of room to nail the trimmers to the king studs and the king studs to the header.
Of frame is 40 x 86 as the frame face is 2 around all 3 sides.
Here is a step by step tutorial on how to install a prehung exterior door frame in a concrete wall.
Mark the opening size for the door on both sides of the wall.
The opening should be two inches wider than the door frame and about an inch taller in height.
Use a concrete drill for this.
Add another set of marks across the top of the frame to represent a steel lintel that will support the load above the door.
If the wall is load bearing i refer to the plans for the proper header size.
You will screw the lumber directly into the cinder blocks that make up the rough opening.
Drill holes into the lumber and the cinder blocks then screw the lumber into the rough opening using cement screws.
