Once everything has been sanded go over the walls and trim with a clean damp cloth to remove any dust or particles.

Ready your work area.
Take care of any drips right away too.
Begin at the top and work your way down making sure to cover all the gaps between the panels.
When painting for wood paneling choose either a stain blocking latex primer or an oil based primer.
Use a prybar and gently pull it loose.
If you plan to paint the trim the same color as the wall lightly sand the adjacent wood trim on baseboards to allow the paint to adhere to it.
Before painting paneling use painter s tape to mask off your mouldings windows doors and ceiling.
Some paneling actually consists of a vinyl print that simulates the look of wood.
To check sand a small area on the wall.
Paint the paneling.
Apply two thin coats of stain blocking primer.
Apply a thin coat of your paint to all paneling surfaces.
Vinyl coatings come off quickly revealing the pressboard underneath.
To paint wood paneling start by filling in the grooves with joint compound if you don t want them to be visible.
Clean the wall paneling with diluted tsp.
Use a brush to fill in any grooves.
If your walls have a vinyl or thin veneer finish you ll need to take extra care when painting them.
Allow the primer to dry a full 24 hours before painting over it.
If you plan to keep the trim s color as is or paint it a shade different than your wood paneling remove it from the wall.
Then once the joint compound is dry sand away any excess compound with coarse sandpaper and sand the entire wall with 220 grit sandpaper to get rid of the protective coating.
When you re ready to start painting make sure that your paneling is made of solid wood.
Let the first coat dry as directed then apply a second coat.
