We started out in the lumber isle at our local hardware store.
First you ll need to figure out what type of sliding barn doors you want.
To determine the door width add at least two inches to the width of the opening or to the outside dimensions of the door trim.
Prepare level flat surface and fasten 2 2x4 boards making a temporary l shape jig for your door make one side of l 8 long and other 6 5 long.
For instance you may want to use solid wood panels for a flat look and paint them to match your color scheme.
You can add more overlap for extra privacy.
Make l shape jig perfectly square.
Use your saw to cut the wood to size.
Which means fewer pieces and cuts and that means easier to build.
Lay all of the boards with nice side up or rough side up if using barn siding.
Hang the door step 11 13 before you begin measure the width of the door from the outside edges of the casing then order a hardware kit with a track twice that width.
How to design your sliding barn doors.
You might want to use shiplap boards like i did for a barn door type effect.
